HEH is equipped with the capacity to perform all types of ophthalmic surgery. However, Cataract is the main surgery. Almost 90% of total intraocular surgery performed at HEH will be cataract. 100% cataract surgeries are with Intra-ocular Lens Implantation. The common type of cataract surgeries are: ECCE, SICS and Phacoemulsification. HEH is a national training centre for phacoemulsification technique and one of its ophthalmologists is a master trainer. The proportion of cataract surgery with phaco has increased significantly in recent years. Other major surgery includes: Vitrectomy, Trab, Kertaoplasty, Squint, DCR, DCT etc. More than 4000 intraocular surgeries are performed in HEH annually. Surgery of children is done under general anesthesia whereas is it is done under local anesthesia in adult patients.
